On a bright and sunny Saturday morning, Sheffield for Europe held a street stall to promote youth opportunities such as the EU’s free movement for youth, the Erasmus+ scheme, and the Young European Movement (YEM), while also raising awareness about the group.
The venue near the Town Hall in the heart of Sheffield was ideal, with nearby fairground rides attracting families and young people enjoying their day out. This provided an excellent opportunity to engage with the community.
We had many positive conversations with individuals eager to strengthen ties with the rest of Europe, particularly to enhance future prospects for our children. Leaflets were distributed for further information, and our flags and stickers were a hit with the kids!
Young people showed keen interest in getting involved, with several expressing frustration that the voting age wasn’t lowered for the referendum, feeling they had missed out. Most were unaware of YEM’s existence and took leaflets to learn more.
Our group also gathered signatures for a petition requesting the Council to fly the European Union flag above the Town Hall on Europe Day, May 9th. We collected 70 signatures in just two and a half hours. Additionally, many people signed up for newsletters from the Sheffield group.
